The ERAfrica Partners of Work Package 1, led by the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy (TEM), have compiled an analytical report on national S&T cooperation programmes as part of their initial work on the Work Package. The report maps and analyses the national and bilateral S&T cooperation programmes currently taking place in the 12 ERAfrica consortium countries, in both Africa and Europe.
Initial findings of the report indicate that despite differences in the amount of programmes in each country, investment in S&T cooperation is nevertheless growing. In addition, the existing programmes in each country can be clustered to draw a more meaningful overall picture. These clusters can serve as the building blocks for designing and developing joint programmes in S&T cooperation across African and European countries. There is clearly still room, however, for a consolidation and coordination of efforts. The differences in structures and methods of funding S&T in each of the analysed countries call for a re-visioning of cooperation in undertaking a coherent approach to coordinated funding. Particularly in thematic areas, a cooperative approach will serve better to address and coordinate funding activities.
